A day in the life of a business and music student

by Sarah Libov '24

Hi! My name is Sarah and Iā€™m a junior business major and music minor from New Jersey. Outside of academics, Iā€™m on the E-Board of the Women In Business club. I also have work-study positions as a social media marketing assistant in Skidmoreā€™s Office of Communications and Marketing and at Arthur Zankel Music Center.

I was drawn to Skidmore for the ability to pursue not just one, but all of my passions while studying here.

I have always had multiple passions in music, technology, and business, and I knew that Skidmore would allow me to explore all of them.

On top of my business major and music minor, Iā€™ve been able to take courses in computer science and graphic design, all of which have helped me develop skills for my career path.

Here is a look into a recent day at Skidmore:

Social media meeting

I begin every Friday with a meeting between myself, my supervisor, and the other student assistant on the social media team in the Office of Communications and Marketing. We sip our coffee and discuss new content ideas for the coming week. My favorite part of this new job is meeting and connecting with new people while making content both inside and outside of the office.

Here's both a glimpse into my job, and a TikTok I worked on for Skidmore:

Call with a Skidmore alum

Today I had a phone call with a Skidmore alum who works at Spotify. One of the highlights of attending Skidmore is the access to its alumni network. The alumni network consists of people from every industry in all sorts of careers. In my experience, Skidmore alumni are extremely friendly and want to get to know you and your career goals.

Lunchtime: Chicken-Finger Friday edition

Here at Skidmore, itā€™s never just Friday. Itā€™s Chicken-Finger Friday! Every Friday, Skidmoreā€™s famous chicken fingers and mac nā€™ cheese are served in D-Hall. Fun fact: The vegan chicken nuggets are just as great as the non-vegan ones!

Women In Business LinkedIn photoshoot

This afternoon, the Women In Business club hosted a LinkedIn photoshoot. This is my favorite of all our events. Each year, we host a photoshoot to allow students to get professional headshots taken, for LinkedIn or other purposes.

Last year, we took photos outside by Haupt Pond. This year, we took them in the lobby of the new Billie Tisch Center for Integrated Sciences. Both sets of photos came out amazing! Here is one of mine:

Studying in Scribner Library

In between events, I head to the library to do some homework in one of the third-floor window seats. These spots are some of my favorites on campus. I love to write papers or plan content while sitting here, looking out the window at the library green and listening to relaxing study music.

DJ Club

Among Skidmoreā€™s vast list of clubs is DJ Club. Itā€™s a way for music producers, DJs, and anyone interested in the music industry to get together and talk about music or learn to DJ. I first joined DJ Club to meet other musicians and producers, and Iā€™ve made some great friends through this club.

Making dinner in my apartment

Another highlight of going to Skidmore is its impressive housing. The residence hall rooms have window seats, which are great for watching the snow in the winter and looking out at the foliage in the fall.

I live in the Sussman apartment village with three of my closest friends, and we have a lot of fun living together. One of our favorite things to do together is cook and try new recipes!

We subscribe to a CSA from a local restaurant and farm, 9 Miles East. Every week we get a delivery of fresh vegetables to cook with. Here is an example of one of our deliveries:

Skidmania concert

Later in the evening, my roommate and I attended Skidmania, a new concert tradition at Skidmore. The Music Department selects a year from music history to celebrate, and student bands audition for a spot in the show.

The theme this year was music from 1972, and 17 bands were chosen to perform. Some of my favorite covers were ā€œAmerican Pieā€ and ā€œDancing in the Moonlight.ā€

That wraps up my day! On Fridays, my housemates and I usually all end the night with a movie. Tonight we chose a classic, ā€œForrest Gump.ā€

As you can see, Skidmore is a place where students can pursue multiple passions and truly have time to dedicate to all of them. It has been very exciting to study business and music at the same time, and it only becomes more fulfilling as I continue my studies here at Skidmore.
