It’s big. It’s green. It’s a scream. And it’s all Skidmore

February 13, 2024

It’s packed. It’s filled with green (and some yellow). And it’s really loud.

Skidmore’s annual Big Green Scream tradition has become a hallmark event where the community comes together to show the collective pride and passion that defines the Thoroughbred spirit.

Fans came out in full force for the Feb. 9 double-header to cheer on Skidmore's basketball teams as they competed in their final two home games, while also partaking in some “only at Skidmore” festivities, such as the return of Recycle Mania, dance performances, contests, and the infectious energy brought on by Skids, Skidmore's beloved mascot.

The games ...

Playing in front of a crowd of over 1,100 fans, both women’s and men’s basketball teams took to the courts of the Williams Sports Center.

Women’s basketball

The unstoppable women’s team won its ninth straight game on Friday night, 65-37, over William Smith, improving to 18-4 overall and 13-2 in the Liberty League. The team remains one game up, with the tiebreaker in its pocket, over Ithaca for second place. William Smith is 5-17 and 5-10 and is tied for seventh.

Junior, , scored a game high 15 points to lead the way for the Thoroughbreds. She connected for a career high five 3-pointers as Skidmore swooshed 11 bombs as a team for the evening, sending the packed house into a near constant state of mayhem.

Men’s basketball

The men’s team gave first-place Hobart a scare in front of adoring fans, getting to within five points of a win with 1:05 left, but a steady half at the foul line gave the first-place Statesmen a 63 to 52 win over the Thoroughbreds.

Prince Shyllon ’26 was Skidmore's leading scorer with 10 off the bench. Senior Ian Bentley had a career-high six blocks with eight points and four rebounds.

The crowd (thank you) was awesome, and it was a playoff atmosphere, which is how it should be around here.
 Joe Burke, head coach

“We played hard for 40 minutes but just couldn't put the ball in the basket. I know they are disappointed, but we made strides tonight," Burke said. "Defensively, the guys did everything we talked about all week. Big things to come in the future for this group if they keep at it."

Skidmore spirit
