Skidmore Spotlight: Chuck Ure
Chuck Ure, a dining services baker, is retiring after 40 years.
Specializing in breads and rolls, Ure is the namesake behind the famous āChuckie Rollā available through campus bread sales and catering services. On his baking legacy, Ure said, āIām not quite sure how the Chuckie Roll got its official name. All I know is that when I first baked them and put them out for others to enjoy, they quickly became very popular.ā
Ure joined Skidmore in 1978 in a sanitation position but, just two years in, transitioned to his baking role where he served for 38 years. Career-long service to Skidmore is a family tradition for Ure, his father spent 36 years working for Skidmore facilities.
On what heās enjoyed most during his time at Skidmore, Ure said, āThe comradery with people and the changes Iāve seen and experienced. Staff, students and community members have all been good to me and a lot of other people. Itās a great atmosphere to work in.ā
Ure said some of his favorite Skidmore memories involve long-term bonds, and rivalries, over sports. āIām a huge sports fan, particularly the Mets and, through talking baseball, have gotten to know a lot of people over the years,ā said Ure.
After Skidmore, Ure plans to spend more time with his father and brothers enjoying their shared passion for baseball and local history. Heās looking forward to more trips to some favorite places, including Bostonās historic districts and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York.
