Kris Covey

Kris Covey, visiting assistant professor of environmental studies and sciences, convened a pair of sessions on “Tropical Forest Biogeochemical and Carbon–Water Cycle Coupling: Observations, Modeling and Feedbacks” at the American Geophysical Union virtual meeting on Dec. 7. The session included two papers co-authored by Zoe Pagliaro â€™20 and Freddie Klaus â€™20.

Rik Scarce

A film by Rik Scarce, professor of sociologypremiered on Nov. 21 at the Austin Indie Fest film festival, where it won the . “Impact: Mobility and Modernity Reconsidered” follows elite barefoot runner Teage O’Connor as he attempts to qualify for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials race. Along the way, it explores the history and science of, and controversy surrounding, running without shoes or in thin, flexible ones. The Skidmore Faculty Development Committee and the Office of the Dean of the Faculty/Vice President for Academic Affairs supported the film, and the MDOCS Storytellers’ Institute provided critical feedback.  

Denise Smith

Denise L. Smith, professor of health and human physiological sciences, co-authored two articles in the International Fire Service Journal of Leadership and Management: â€ś.” The paper on occupational medical evaluations reflected work from her recent FEMA-funded project that aims to enhance medical screening for firefighters, while the second paper reflects research collaboration with the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute, Underwriters Laboratory Firefighters Safety Institute and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.
