New Student Advising & Registration Guide

Art (AR)

The art major offers a rich and diverse range of courses across the disciplines of art making and art history. The major balances broad exploration with a focus in a particular art discipline. Drawing is a course that all majors share. Students can begin exploring introductory courses in specialized areas as early as their first year. There are ten areas within the art curriculum: Ceramics, Communication Design, Drawing, Digital Media, Fiber Arts, Jewelry and Metals, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture. By spring term of their third year, majors will have shifted from exploration to concentration in an area as preparation for their capstone experience – The Senior Thesis Exhibition.

Majors will complete twelve studio art courses and three art history courses. Faculty serve not only as teachers within their area of expertise, but also as advisors who help students select and pursue the courses and course of study best suited to each individual.

Skidmore is a charter member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
