Joseph “Jo-Jo” L. Moore
Joseph “Jo-Jo” L. Moore, a respected and deeply dedicated Dining Services employee for nearly a half-century who rose through the ranks to become chef, died on March 24, 2023, at the Warren Rehabilitation Center in Queensbury. He was 84.
Jo-Jo joined Skidmore in 1959 as a dishwasher. He eventually became a cook and received multiple promotions over the years. In 1980, he was named chef and held that position until his retirement in 2006.
Colleagues described Jo-Jo, who was one of Skidmore’s longest-serving union employees, as always kind, respectful, and supportive of junior staff.
“He was a mentor to all of us,” said Brian Burns, who worked as a cook for two decades under Jo-Jo. “When we did something right, Jo-Jo was the first person to offer praise. If he saw that somebody was struggling, he was the first person to jump in to help out.”
"Jo-Jo treated everybody like they were family. He was the kindest, nicest man I ever met,” added Kevin Lloyd, who worked with Jo-Jo in the kitchen in the 1980s. “He never raised his voice, always had a smile on his face, was fun to be around, and loved Skidmore."
Born on Feb. 2, 1939, in Baltimore, Jo-Jo married Sherryl J. Moore, who predeceased him.
Jo-Jo is survived by his children Darreyl (Julie) Bullard and Sherryl Hamilton; many grandchildren and a great-grandchild; three sisters; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to Sherryl, Jo-Jo was preceded in death by his eldest son, Milton Tyrone Bullard.
