2021 Juried Student Exhibition
EXHIbIT DATES: February 24 – March 19, 2021
JUROR: Alisa Sikelianos-Carter, Artist
Each year, Skidmore College art students submit works in a range of materials, including
prints, photographs, sculpture, graphic design, painting, drawing, animation, fibers,
jewelry, and ceramics. From 200+ submissions, a juror unaffiliated with the Skidmore
Art Department selects 70 – 85 works for inclusion in the exhibition. The Juried Student
Exhibition is a perennial favorite, showcasing works in all media and celebrating
the imagination and skill of Skidmore College art students.
Our juror this year is Alisa Sikelianos-Carter, a mixed-media visual artist living
and working in upstate New York. Inspired by traditionally Black hairstyles, Sikelianos-Carter
uses web and catalogue sourced images to construct new archetypes. Her opulent, large-scale
figural works celebrate and pay homage to Black ancestral majesty, power and aesthetics.
Sikelianos-Carter earned her MA from SUNY Albany. She has been awarded numerous residencies,
including The Millay Colony for the Arts, The Wassaic Project, and Yaddo. Her recent
exhibitions include group shows at the Tang Teaching Museum, Saratoga Springs, NY;
Pelham Art Center, Pelham, NY; and the Bronx Art Space, Bronx, NY.
