Community Service Federal Work-Study Program

America Reads/America Counts Tutors

Skidmore College receives Federal Work-Study funding from the Department of Education to design a community-based project in the Saratoga Springs area to help boost literacy and reading levels, as well as tutoring in math within the elementary schools. As an America Reads/America Counts tutor, you can share a love of reading with a child; teach a child additional math skills; connect with the off-campus community; and gain skills that improve your resume while having a fun and challenging experience.

Eligibility for the Program

Only students with Federal Work-Study are eligible to participate in this program. Please contact the Student Employment Coordinator at stuemp@skidmore.edu if you are not sure you receive Federal Work-Study.

Sign in to the Student Employment Dashboard (Oracle) via Okta in the link below to apply for a tutoring position.

Your Responsibilities as a Tutor

As an America Reads/America Counts tutor you are a representative of Skidmore College. Not only will the elementary school rely upon you, but more important, the children you work with will rely upon you. As a tutor you must be willing to commit yourself to this worthwhile program. Treat your tutoring as seriously as you would your academic work. You will be gaining valuable experience, performing a valuable service to the community, along with helping children learn to read and count.
