Course Description

Walking Saratoga: Taking Steps to Discover "Home" in New Places

Instructor(s): Tammy Owens, American Studies

What is your definition of home? How do we create home(s) in new places? In this course, you will examine diverse perspectives and definitions of ā€œhomeā€ while walking to navigate and discover the geography of your new shared homeā€”Skidmore Collegeā€”in Saratoga Springs. We will pair a series of walking tours with an interdisciplinary study of the history of landmarks in Saratoga Springs and the ways narratives of ā€œhomeā€ are socially constructed according to individual experiences, identities, and desires for belonging. This class will highlight representations of home within American literature, visual and material culture, pop culture, and history.
