Preparing to Go Off Campus

As you prepare to study abroad, you will find that there are many details you must pay attention to and a long list of things "to do."  You’ll receive a lot of information – both from Skidmore and directly from your program provider.  It’s important you read all the information, especially the OCSE Student Handbook.  

In addition to the logistical tasks you need to complete, there is mental and emotional preparation that you should take time to consider. The required pre-departure orientation will go over a lot of information, but we encourage you to also do your own research and preparation.

Going off-campus requires you to plan ahead and complete many tasks – both for Skidmore, your provider as well as planning for your return to campus.  This checklist will guide you on your ‘to-do’s’ before heading off-campus

Studying in a new environment can be a challenge and you should be prepared for this new and different experience.  This section will give you information about course credits and approvals, and academics abroad.

In order to reach your off-campus study program, you may need to utilize air travel.  It is important that you understand your rights as a consumer.  The Department of Transportation (DOT) has developed , a consumer guide to air travel.  This website provides information on purchasing airfare, your rights when your flight is delayed, cancelled or overbooked, as well as contact information for the DOT in the event you would like to issue a complaint about airline service.

Staying healthy and safe while traveling requires preparation, research, and paying careful attention to health and safety precautions specific to the countries you are visiting. This section contains information, recommendations, and links to further resources on health and safety abroad.

All Skidmore students pay a comprehensive fee to go off-campus. You’ll need to consider budgeting for out-of-pocket expenses based on your program location and spending habits.
