Jazz Teacher Summit - July 10, 2025

The Skidmore Jazz Institute is pleased to partner with the to offer New York State (NYS) teachers the opportunity to earn continuing teacher and leader education (CTLE) hours.

Thursday, July 10, the Institute will present a day-long program of master classes with the Institute’s faculty including Todd Coolman, Dennis Mackrel, Russell Haight, Brian Carucci and Andrew Lammly. Topics will include rhythm section fundamentals, building blocks of a strong jazz program, and strategies for improving your sax section’s sound. Teachers will have the chance to attend Institute classes while in session, and the program concludes with a concert featuring the Skidmore Jazz Faculty All-Stars.  All activities will be held in the Arthur Zankel Music Center and dinner will be included.  A draft schedule follows below.   

This professional learning opportunity is available at no cost to NYS secondary and post-secondary music educators. Interested teachers must register with the Greater Capital Region Teacher Center for Effective Learning to earn seven (7) CTLE hours. The link to register is .

  • 1:30–3 p.m. Welcome and tour of Institute student combos – Zankel Music Center Lobby
  • 3–4:00 p.m. Rhythm Section Fundamentals with Todd Coolman and Dennis Mackrel – Zankel Music Center Room 215
  • 5:15–7 p.m. Building Blocks for a Strong Jazz Program. Q&A with Andrew Lammly and Brian Carucci, Dinner provided – Zankel Music Center Beckerman Rehearsal Room 006
  • 7:30–9 p.m. Skidmore Jazz Faculty All-Star Sextet featuring Lauren Sevian (saxophone), Mike Rodriguez (trumpet), Sara Jacovino (trombone), Bill Cunliffe (piano), Todd Coolman (bass), David Wong (bass) and Dennis Mackrel (drums) – Ladd Concert Hall, Arthur Zankel Music Center
